TAP has been around for quite some time, and it simply describes the text
based protocol for calling a paging (or SMS) terminal and sending a page to
a paging subscriber thru it.

Historically, most paging companies (including ourselves, we are both an ISP
and paging carrier) have TAP access to their paging terminals, as this is
the protocol most often used to send alpha pages.  Most still have them, but
they don't quite advertise them as much as most are moving to email based
alpha paging gateways.

TAP is supported natively in most monitoring apps (like What's UP and
Imail's Email to pager and monitoring functions).  Most US Paging carriers
will support TAP, but you might have to spend some time on the phone trying
to find out the phone number to their TAP port, so you can send pages to it.

We use our own TAP port for what's up, because as this thread has stated, if
it's your email server that's hosed, fat chance on getting an email based
alert.  We setup our alerts like this:

Mail Server
2 minutes:  call TAP port to alert alpha pager
3 minutes:  call my cell phone
4 minutes:  call me at home

Everything else:
2 minutes:  send email alert
3 minutes:  call TAP port to alert alpha pager
4 minutes:  call my cell phone
5 minutes:  call me at home

This way, if the mail server is down, it doesn't bother sending me an email.
