Only recently, I've gotten a couple of clients that are REALLY starting to
use the iMail list server. On one occasion, I had nearly 70K names hit the
out-going queue. Because I've sent the lists to include 1,500 names per
queue, it wasn't a horrible mess -- also, there where actually 5 different
lists involved, so they hit a bit staggered over an hours period. At no
time did have more that about 18 SMTP queues running. I quite watching the
queues and noticed that regular mail was coming and going with absolutely
not delay. Every so often, one of the list mailer queues would get REAL
busy and pump out 200 or 300 names and then go idle.
About a year ago, our "regular" email load was much smaller and the few
lists that we had always went out really quick. None of them were over
3,000 names, but still, there really wasn't a delay. So what changed? The
traffic load of regular emails.
I know that iMail's list server puts "bulk" in the header of the emails. Is
it possible that iMail is using that to queue these message up and wait
until the server is idle for some amount of time before trying to send the
list messages -- under the assumption that they are bulk and not as
important? If so, can there be some "tuning" options provided -- i.e. don't
put bulk in the message header or down worry about the idle time issue or
set what "idle" means or something?
If the above is known and old, sorry -- I don't remember seeing it. If it
is new, perhaps Ipswitch can comment on this and let us know if there is a
fix on their side.
Oh, I know that there are other ways of getting the list mail out -- I'm
considering Listar and working with Len on that. But, since one of the
major reasons I bought iMail was for the included list server, I'd like to
make use of it.
