Yes I have smtp debuggin checked (stopped and restarted), logging
service can interact with desktop (stopped and started), smtp service
can interact with the desktop (stopped and started). I pop open the
client, the debug window pops up but only reports what is happening
with the pop client itself.

have you tried turning on SMTP debugging to get more log info?
