We went with the pro version simply because some people do not want
their mail filtered and it causes them grief. After a little playing we
set up our defaults and have probably been tagging over 80% of the junk
mail with a spam message and probably less than 3% of legitimate mail.
The settings we are using can be seen at
http://ace-internet.net/filter_request.htm we have the default settings
marked on this form. We have quite a few tests set to warn so we can
track down individuals spam problems and modify their filter settings if
they are getting hit a lot from one particular source or another (we can
see if the stuff that made it through perhaps failed one test or
another).

What most users are doing is to create an inbox rule which will move
those we tagged with a spam message to a different folder so they can
review the titles before they delete them. We have had a couple set it
to delete based on our default settings though.

Personally I would recommend the pro version so you can have a choice
but setting up individual users could become a hassle depending on your
user base.

The key is to use the right tests (the "right" tests are different for
different people).

For example, we strongly discourage people from using the BADWHOIS test
(run by http://www.rfc-ignorant.org ), as it blocks a lot of legitimate
mail (it lists several TLDs such as uk and us).

Then there are other tests that you almost certainly should use, such as

the BADHEADERS test, which will catch a lot of spam but won't catch any
legitimate E-mail (except mail coming from broken E-mail clients, but
those
could easily get discarded elsewhere anyways).

Those do tend to be very effective for most people.

We are happy to give you advice on the settings to use. The problem is
that different people have different needs. Different domains tend to
get
different types of spam, depending on how long the domain has been used,

where the addresses have been used, and so forth. We do have a list of
the
DNS-based tests and some information on each of them at
http://www.declude.com/junkmail/support/ip4r.htm , but nobody seems to
have
a list that includes information such as what % of spam they are
catching,
if any legitimate mail is getting caught, and so forth -- so we just
don't
have access to that kind of information.

Our two usual suggetions are either [1] Check the Declude JunkMail logs
to
see what tests are failing, to get an idea of which tests are most
useful
to you, or [2] subscribe to the Declude JunkMail mailing list and see
what
others are using/suggesting (you can send an E-mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
with "subscribe declude.junkmail Your Name" in the body to join).
