As Len noted, this is covered in the FAQs. However...

The FAQs on this error are all but useless. Both the
10054 and 10053 are socket-related errors. None of
the suggestions there seem to be of any help.

We are running a pristine IMail install on a Win2000
Server box. It has dual P-III 600 processors and 1GB
of RAM. Since upgrading to 7 (currently 7.0.4HF1) we
have seen tens of thousands of lines of log errors
with the 'send error' message and a reference to one
or the aforementioned codes.

I am logging SMTP to the sysMMDD.txt logs and POP3
(via the logging daemon) to the logMMDD.txt logs. At
this point, fully two-thirds of our POP3 logs are
send error lines. I noted one case where there were
more than 1600 consecutive send errors in a span of
less than 20 seconds. That's a rate of one about
ever 12ms.

Our initial report to IMail was met with a stock
suggestion to install the hotfix (which we had not
yet done, waiting to see if it burned anyone). After
installing the hotfix we are still seeing the problem.

If I am understanding the log files correctly, this
problem develops when the POP3 daemon has trouble
delivering a message to a POP3 client. While it seems
to occur more frequently with dialups, we have also
seen it on occasion with broadband users (both cable
and DSL) and with users who are not directly connected
to us (i.e., our customers connecting from their office
or other remote locations via the 'Net).

I am refiling the report with Ipswitch today. Should I
receive any useful information I will follow up here.

Subject: [IMail Forum] send error - 10054

Can someone help me with the following error showing in our log
files

<snip of log>
20011017 102926 127.0.0.1 POP3D (00000113) send error
216.187.203.254 10054
20011017 102926 127.0.0.1 POP3D (00000113) send error
216.187.203.254 10054
20011017 102927 127.0.0.1 POP3D (00000113) send error
216.187.203.254 10054
20011017 102927 127.0.0.1 POP3D (00000113) send error
216.187.203.254 10054
20011017 102927 127.0.0.1 POP3D (00000113) send error
216.187.203.254 10054
</snip of log>

This is happening multiple times a day for about 10 - 15 minutes
each time. When this occurs the POP3D service takes 90 - 95% of the
cpu cycles.

Any insight is apprecitated.
