Have you made sure to UNcheck the "Disable SMTP AUTH reporting" checkbox on 
the SMTP Security tab?  If you have that checked, IMail will not report 
that it can accept SMTP AUTH, so most mail clients would not be able to 
authenticate.  If you uncheck it, it will work the way you want it to.
