FWIW, here's the list of valid characters:
!#$%&'*+-/0123456789=?ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~
That's uppercase/lowercase letters, numbers, and the following characters:
!#$%&'*+-/=?^_`{|}~
That's according to RFC821 page 31. RFC822 allows for any "atext"
(undefined) characters, or any a single quoted "qcontent" (again,
undefined). Note that the % character is used in addressing, so it won't
be valid in an address. Likewise, some other characters may be interpreted
in some unexpected way, or break some programs.
