Thanks Eric, I also found this in the manual under 'Setting up IMail Server as a Mail Gateway'. I first had the hostname of the MX record for the non-local e-mail domain associated with the private IP address I wanted to route the messages to, in my IMail server 'hosts' file. But that did not work. I had expected IMail to look up the MX record for the non-local e-mail domain and then try to resolve that hostname to IP address from its 'hosts' file.
After re-reading the section, I put the e-mail domain name (different from its MX record) associated with the private IP address I wanted to route the messages to, in my IMail server 'hosts' file and it started working. Daniel Kleinsinger: This solution should also resolve your 'Gateway exception' issue. Thanks Len for your BIND9 suggestion. Unfortunately we do not host the domain name for the non-local e-mail domain. They have a mail server among other servers co-located behind the same firewall as our IMail server. Hence we did not want to try to duplicate their entire zone file with the exception of the MX record on our DNS servers.
