TIP OF THE MONTH: Mail Relay Options Explained

IMail Server will always accept mail addressed to any of its
users. If the message is not addressed to a local user then
IMail will check the mail relay options to see if the message
will be accepted for delivery. Email sent using Web Messaging
is not subject to the mail relay rules.

'No Mail Relay' is the most secure option. The only way to
send a message to an external domain is to use SMTP AUTH. SMTP
AUTH is a method whereby the client has to authenticate by
providing their username and password prior to sending the
outbound email.

'Relay for Addresses' is the most used option. By choosing
this option, IMail will check the IP address of the sending
client against the list of acceptable addresses before
accepting an email addressed to an external domain. The list
of acceptable addresses is provided by the administrator.
This option should be used whenever possible. If the sending
client does not have an IP address in the acceptable range,
they could still send outbound email by using SMTP AUTH.

'Relay for Local Hosts' and 'Relay for Local Users' are less
secure and can lead to your domain getting added to a
blacklist (you will not be able to send mail to some domains).
These options check to see if the "from address" of a message
is from a domain or user that is on IMail. If the domain or
user does not match, IMail will reject the message.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Question: How can I use rules to filter spam?

Answer: The most common method for using rules to block spam
is to search the subject and body of the message for
objectionable content. For example, the following rule would
catch any email with "XXX" in the subject line and send to a
submailbox called spambox:

S~XXX:spambox

If you want to search the body of the message, you could use
a rule similar to this: B~badword:spambox
