We have had mixed success with having users authenicate with the OL 97 patches - some times it works and sometimes it does not.  The user does have to manually set it to authenticate I do believe.

Outlook 97 was a flawed product (that is why MS came out with 98 so quick and gave a free upgrade) so I always recommend that people upgrade.  The big issue is that MS no longer offers OL 98.

When we switched to requiring SMTP authentication we had more issues with Eudora users having to upgrade then we did with OL 97.

To answer your final question, it will only work for those people if their version of OL will support SMTP Auth.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Relay - Authentication - Outlook 97

Note the FAQ below, especially the "A user reports:..."

This means that:

1.  the user doesn't have to do anything in order to authenticate, because it automatically authenticates to outgoing and incoming, OR

2.  All 97 users are SOL, and I have to upgrade hundreds of users to 98 or above.

Finally, when I change the relay options and require authentication, will it work for my 97 users?

Question/Problem: When running Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 there is a setting for "My Server Requires Authentication". Where is this setting in Outlook 97?

Answer/Solution: You will need to install Internet mail Enhancement patch for Outlook 97 to have access to these features. This is also found in Office 97 SP1 and SP2b.

A user reports: these service packs do not allow for SMTP authentication. The user must upgrade to at least Outlook 98 for this option.
