I just thought of another solution. You can setup Len Conrad's IMGate and use POP before SMTP. This would then only require that they fetch POP email (using SMTP AUTH from their mail client) before sending bounce messages with mailwasher. And if they use Outlook for example, they can have it check for POP mail every 5 minutes or so, keeping the SMTP window open as long as they have email open.
