We are currently running MS Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT 4. We host email for
approx. 1100 customers (including our in-house people). For most of our
customers, we also host their "virtual domain" website. So, in addition to
our own domains we host about 200 domains worth of email.

I am trying to do a migration from Exchange to Imail 7.06 (Windows 2000
Server). I have found that the structure is very different between the two.
In Exchange, I can just add a user to the NT User Database which attaches to
a recipient account in Exchange. Once the recipient account is created, I
can add as many email addresses as I want to under the recipient account. I
can cross over domains because the domain routing list is separate from the
user list. For example I can create an NT User account called "User1". This
creates a recipient called User1 in Exchange. I can then add email addresses
under User1's account so that any emails sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well
as [EMAIL PROTECTED] "funnel" into User1's account. User1 then sets up his
email client software to access only one account but receives mail for two
email addresses.

Apparently in Imail, in order to accomplish this, I would have to decide
which email address to make the primary recipient (in our case, let's make
it [EMAIL PROTECTED]). I would have to set up a user called "User1" under a
host called "mail.domain1.com". Then I would have to set up an additional
user called "User1" under a new host called "mail.domain2.com" and have it
forward all mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is this the only way to do it? Is
there a better way?

Another big problem I forsee with migrating to IMail is that all of our
customers currently have their client software set to access one domain
(example) mail.domain1.com as their POP3 server. From what I understand, a
user can only access his/her mail by setting the POP3 server for whichever
domain their email address is under. Example, if my email address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED], I have to check mail.domain2.com and [EMAIL PROTECTED]
has to check mail.domain3.com. This will create tons of additional work for
me because I'll have to contact every company that has a virtual domain with
us (over 200) and have them change their POP3 setting. If I'm way off base
here, please correct me.

If anyone out there has migrated from Exchange 5.5 to Imail, I would be
extremely grateful if you could provide some insight on how you made the
move. In a perfect world, I'd like to have as little downtime as possible
while making the move. I'd also like to be able to not make everyone have to
change their pop3 server setting or account name. I'm not quite as concerned
about the forwarding thing, but am obviously open to suggestion if I'm not
understanding that concept.

Thanks in advance.
