Chet,

This requirement is met by at least five architectural variants:

(1) The ability to control whether a local POP3 user is assigned an
SMTP AUTH password at all.

(2) The ability to assign local users different SMTP AUTH and POP3
passwords.

(3) The ability to offer SMTP-only accounts, including SMTP AUTH
passwords, to select users, while allowing anonymous users to send
mail only to specific domains.

(4) The ability to restrict the SMTP daemon's access to SMTP AUTH
passwords stored in a SQL column, thus disabling SMTP AUTH for an
entire domain.

(5) The abiliity to restrict the SMTP daemon's access to SMTP AUTH
passwords for particular SQL rows.

(1) and (2) are offered by other products, but I don't feel right
discussing this on-list; contact me directly if you want--and I would
only be going over add-ons to Imail, not substitutes.

(3) is offered by Microsoft SMTP Server, which I've found to be an
*excellent* adjunct to Imail for exactly the same purposes as IMGate.

(4) is possible in Imail if you are using a SQL Server 2000 database
through column-level permissions.

(5) *should* be possible using personalized views in SQL Server
7+--haven't tried this one.
