Hello all,

Alas, I too made this mistake a couple of weeks ago. I've been running IMail
for a couple of months and am quite familiar with setting up hosts (virtual
and otherwise). Late one Friday afternoon I added 6 virtual hosts, and I
decided to get really dumb and I bound the new virtual hosts to the IP of
our main mail host. Duh. (Note to self: don't touch servers on Fridays). It
seemed that I could not easily undo my mistake, so I panicked, and in my
state of confusion I only made matters worse. I honestly can't remember
exactly what I did, but the more I squirmed, the more the quicksand pulled
me down. About an hour later I had completely botched up the server, all I
had left of my primary host was the mail directories. I tried to call
Ipswitch, but, the sensible folks they are, they had gone home for the
weekend. Some of my 200 mail users started calling me... the heat was
getting hotter. Of course, I could have restored from backup, but our backup
only runs every 24 hrs. and on this particular day we had made many changes
to the IMail server. So, I did what any good IMail-admin-in-training would
do; I re-created all the usernames and passwords by hand. No, really, it was
that, or I'd have to tell my boss what I had done. Desperate times call for
desperate measures. Fortunately, our brilliant accounting software keeps
mail logins/passwords.

So, to make a long story short, after I re-entered all the logins and
passwords by hand, it all seemed to work, the mail folders and such were
miraculously working correctly, so I didn't touch anything else... I just
sweated it out for the weekend. First thing on Monday morning I called
Ipswitch and invoked my support contract and the problem was solved in
seconds.

So, my question is this... Ipswich held my hand as we fixed the NT
registries, and everything seems to be working fine since then. However, is
their anything else that I may have damaged during my debacle of
destruction?

Now that I'm a bona fide IMail user (and not just an IMail list voyeur) I'm
going to post my other 9 IMail questions (but only one at a time, and only
after I get this little problem behind me...)

Thanks to you all for all your advice.

Denise.
