Len, I'm confused! (please no flames, i'm trying to understand)
Your opinion is that to manage large (huge) DNS configurations, one should use BIND because it is a non-GUI tool and everything is done by manipulating text based zone files. As I understand it, BIND is a port of the classic BIND program written for Unix but can now run also on Windows servers. BIND, in either form (Unix or Windows version) does not have any GUI and all configuration/administration changes are done with line editors or scripts that automate editing text files. Now, many folks here are using programs like Microsoft DNS or Simple DNS which have a nice easy-to-use GUI. BUT, all of these programs also have text-based zone files that can be directly changed, if desired, using any line editor or scripting tools. Ok, here's what I DON'T GET -- What's wrong with that! Why shouldn't I use a program such as Microsoft DNS or Simple DNS (or others), that let's me use BOTH a GUI (when I'm in a hurry or want to) and/or I can still use or create any kind of scripting / line editing stuff I want. The GUI alone sucks when scaling up to 100's or 1000's of itemsl, so you have to "fix" it by adding programming and scripting. MS's "vision", myopic beyond the desktop, couldn't see that tons of people would need to manage "lists" of 100's or 1000's of items (aka, a database), and their desktop GUI doesn't hack it.
