Danny, I second Terry's remarks regarding MS SMTP--I use it to great success as a Smart Host for Imail at several sites. To offload the end-to-end delivery from SQL, you could set MS SMTP up on your Imail box (on a different port and/or IP) and have SQL send everything just one hop upstream.
As far as the personalized message option, all I can suggest is that you analyze the business requirements for such a setup. Of course, you may still come out on the side of one-message-per-user, but just think it through again with an eye toward performance. There also remains the question of how you're sending from SQL, which I didn't see specified. I've noticed that SQL Mail, which is MAPI-based, is quite inefficient, and processor-intensive, with the Internet Mail service (rather than Exchange over RPC), and I wouldn't recommend it if it's currently in use. I also must comment regarding Pau's reply that "DOS RAM" is a misguided (or mistranslated?) suggestion. I believe Scott has said this before: DECLUDE.EXE and SMTP32.EXE are 32-bit Windows processes, there is no such console-specific memory type that can make any difference. It is true that streaming virus scanning, using any product--especially when all of your 150K message bodies are application-generated!--will add overhead.
