It is possible. The subject has been discussed at length on the
forum. I think Sanford may even have discussed some tests
comparing dropping files into the queue over using an smtp too.

IMAIL's speed does not compare to MS SMTP. With Perl BulkMail
package and envelope sending I've gotten performance with MS SMTP
at considerably higher than 30,000 messages per hour. It is my
opinion that IMAIL cannot meet this kind of performance based on
my own observations. You could add additional MS SMTP servers to
get better results if necessary.
If you are dissatisfied with MS SMTP then you need to consider an
IMGATE box or some other *nix mta but even they will not perform
drastically better than MS smtp.
There may be other factors. You need a lot of bandwidth and good
DNS whatever you do if you have big lists.
