This may have to do with MIME settings. When sending mail from a Mac, often you will get two files: one the actual file data, the other the resource fork. Macintosh files hold a bunch of additional information about the file and it's held in what's called the resource fork. This helps keep information about the file when it's moved from one location to another, or from one Mac to another. However, when sending a file to a PC, this information gets stripped into the seperate resource fork file. If this didn't happen, a GIF file would have an entirely different format which applications on a PC wouldn't be able to process.
