There is a 2-part answer to this one ("You are both right").

IMail needs the entry in the HOSTS file, as per the manual and KB (and, as 
you say, if anyone has tested and found otherwise, please post your results 
here).

On the other hand, many mailservers use the preferred method by knowing 
which MX record they are, and only trying ones with lower preference 
value.  In this case, a HOSTS file wouldn't be necessary, and there would 
be no mail loop.
