I'm afraid that "Norton AntiVirus" is not specific enough. Symantec sells several versions of its antivirus software. Most of them are *not* appropriate for use on a mail server such as IMail. In particular, the software must be SMTP-aware, so to speak. A disastrous example would be to use a desktop version to check for viruses using "real-time protection" (on-access scanning as opposed to on-demand) and scan mailboxes. A user's MAIN.MBX single file contains all the messages s/he has in her "Main" IMail folder. Guess what happens if Norton is told to delete any file that it finds to be infected and that one message among 500 in the MAIN.MBX file carries a virus? Yes, the whole MAIN.MBX file would be deleted. There are other reasons such as basic antivirus programs not being able to properly decode MIME segments, but I think that I scared you enough already ;) If you have a vested interest in using an antivirus program with "Norton" in the product name, you will want to use Norton AntiVirus for Internet E-mail Gateways (NAVIEG) or go with IMail AntiVirus which incorporates the same (Norton) CarrierScan engine that Ipswitch licensed from Symantec. This will cost you a lot. The general consensus here is to use Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com/) along with some inexpensive antivirus software such as F-Prot (http://www.f-prot.com/). Declude allows a desktop-type of antivirus program to operate in an "SMTP-aware" fashion. Disclaimer: I don't work for Declude. I'm simply stating that their product(s) has (have) received stellar reviews and recommendations from members of this forum. See for yourself by searching the archives and on Declude's website.
