Is there any indication that the mail isn't going to the backup MX
records?

Yes, that's why I was asking. The message just gets re-qued, over and
over, till after the 20th attempt it bounces.
The only way I was able to get the email delivered was to add an entry
in the IMAIL machine's hosts file, using the IP address (4.22.69.5) of
the secondary mail server for varianinc.com which was some flowery name,
amaryllis, or something like that.
Once I did this, the mail went right through. I saw no indications in my
logs of IMAIL ever attempting to contact any server but the webshield
one.
