Regarding this particular section I can give only my own experience. For
some reason I must have really angered someone or was targeted somehow with
my domain vcsites.com which is my old company and I'm now with someone else.
My old e-mail address [EMAIL PROTECTED] one day was signed up with some
program to submit my site to 900+ search engines. Well, the site they
submitted was vcsites.co.uk the e-mail address they used
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'. So, consequently in 20 minutes I received over 400
confirmations and other notes saying I was subscribed to their lists. (I'm
getting ta a point here soon.) I shutdown the account and created a new
mailbox and told everyone to write to it. Meanwhile I kept tabs it and
noticed I got over 60 spams a day to that account alone.
I decided since I never use this but for e-mail every once in a while, I
removed the nobody alias and just let everything bounce.
Two weeks ago our mail server was begging bogged down with over 700 messages
in the queue, many of which were deferred. My boss was wondering what was
going on. I found out that in addition to [EMAIL PROTECTED] getting
spammed, every possible combination of anything @vcsites.com was being sent
e-mail. This domain has had, at most, 5 different addresses and none
anything like what was being spammed but nonetheless every 2 minutes another
spam would come in directed to at least 10 @vcsites.com nonexistent
addresses.
My server was working double to gather the mail, and then send bounced
messages. I decided to re-setup the nobody address but have it forward to a
box with rules setup to simply delete every piece of mail that comes in.
that has helped with our server's load.
