We are using a Cisco PIX, but I don't think we are using the firewall's e-mail related add-in. I won't be able to access the system until Tuesday so I can't get the logs at this time (it is not in production yet). The person who was working this told me the message made it to the IMail server and was sitting in the spool directory. If he edited the file and changed the IP address in the header from the "outside" address to the translated "inside" IP address, IMail then routed it correctly.

Cisco PIX or something else? Like John said consult the logs and see these articles if your firewall uses smtp fixup protocol or something similar. Odds are that you may not be authenticating correctly due to the firewall's e-mail related add-ins. http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20000707-DM02.htm http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/search/search.pl C.
