We're looking at possibly setting up Imail on a second machine to work as a backup mail spooler incase of the primary Imail server going down. I understand about the need to purchase a second license of Imail if we do this, but right now we're just looking at what it would take if we decided to use Imail as a backup. That will work. And, I believe you could get the new $495 version of IMail, since you won't be storing any accounts on the server (although you may need to check with Ipswitch to make sure the licensing allows it).
I've gone through the knowledge base and found some things, but to be frank, I'm a bit confused by what I'm supposed to do. The secondary Imail server will only be used as a backup, it won't be used for any other purpose. If you search the Knowledge Base for "gateway", the first article that comes up should be the one that covers it (a gateway and a backup mail server function in exactly the same way, it's just a matter of whether you have all mail come in to the server ("gateway"), or only have mail come in when the primary is down ("backup")).
One other thing, what would be the cons of changing the secondary server's SMTP service to a different port then 25 since we won't be using it to do any relaying? That isn't going to work. :)
SMTP is used for both incoming mail (to your users) and outgoing mail (from your users). So if you have it listen to a port other than 25, spammers (and your users) almost certainly won't find it, but the mailservers sending your backup server mail won't be able to find it either. So when your primary is down, your backup won't receive any mail.
When you can do is use the "No mail relay" option in the SMTP Security settings, and nobody will be able to send outgoing mail through that server.
