Yes, I had that once on our Web server. A hacker had gotten in and created a series of subdirectories under one another, and filled them with stolen software.... I managed to remove all but the root folder at the time and plugged the hole. That root folder was not just a basic name, such as 'Unknown'. It contained some strange illegal characters in it that wouldn't allow NT4 to do anything with it, much like what you are describing.
