Len, thanks for the detailed explanation. What we've done is brought in-house our previously out-sourced email (to mailcentro.com) and saved a whopping US $3k+/month in the process. We had about 13k active users previously, 36k resgistered. In the week since our switch over to IMail, we've had close to 12k individual users logon and activate their accounts under the new IMail system. Our interface is 100 times better w/the customizations, but I have to hand it to mailcentro, they really had the spam under control. I know that they subscribe to the ORDB.org anti-spam lists/services.

Len, I'm still a complete rookie in the email management game....just what is "SMTP/IP hangup,"

normally, an SMTP dialog terminates with both client and server following protocol and one party, usually, the SMTP client, hanging up with quit command when it has finished sending to the SMTP server.

The server is usually passive and just waits for commands from the SMTP client, or if total silence from the client, times out and hangs up unilaterally.

IMGate/postfix can be set to hangup abruptly in the face of repeated protocol violations, or excessive 5xx or 4xx codes sent to the client. I set the thresholds very low, 3 errors and hangup, and the inactivity timeout at 15 secs.

because it sure sounds like something we need to implement. We're up to over 12k users after 1 week online. The spam keeps on givin'and growin'.

A lot of spammers just send one msg per session, so the hangup tactic doesn't work. But a lot of spammers try to send several dozen msgs in the same session, hoping that some recipients are accepted.

From your brief description, it's not too clear if the unilateral hangup tactic would make any difference.
