We are moving our
iMail boxes for all our clients from one server to a server on an entirely
different network. Below are the preparatory steps I have taken, and the
remaining steps I plan to take in order to complete this migration. Before
we begin the process, I'd like to ask (in my most appreciative voice!) for
everyone to take a look, and let me know if there are any major oversights, or
if this is just totally wrong.
My steps are based
on (1) postings in this newsgroup, and (2) iMail article found at http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19980116-JB11.htm.
Already
done:
1. DNS
Servers have been moved to new datacenter.
2. Name
server IP addresses have been changed at regisrar, and those IP addresses appear
to have propagated. The new DNS servers are now providing authoritative
answers for all client zones.
3. All
client zone TTLs have been reduced from 7 days (!) to 5
minutes.
MIGRATION
PLAN:
=============
1.
Completely shut down all iMail services on current server.
2. Change
all DNS zones of all clients so that the new IP address of the mail server is
distributed by the DNS servers, verify that all slave servers immediately
synchronize with primary dns.
3. Back up
entire server per http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19980116-JB11.htm.
4. Restore
entire server, on new box at new datacenter
5. Configure
iMail on new box, for new IP address of the new box it's on.
6. Start new
mail server
7. Increase
TTL after testing is complete
My only thought is
that step (2) should actually happen after step 6 (?).
