You have to take user database access issues out of the equation to dig deeper into this. Create a dummy domain using a database type other than your usual (such as NT SAM if you're otherwise using Registry, Registry if you're using ODBC, etc.). Try to authenticate against the dummy domain and see if you have the same "non-returning function" kind of situation. I'd also like to second others in that I've never had a problem authenticating to IMail from Eudora, The Bat!, Outlook, or OE. For the record, have you made sure to test with MD5 on and off in your client? MD5 is optional in The Bat!, for example, though your logs show that the MUA is selecting MD5 from the list of AUTH options. (This is unlikely to relate directly to the issue, but is just part of setting up a good testbed.)
