5.09 was, IIRC, what I ran for LONG time, and we never had SMTP AUTH problems.However, I notice you are at IMAIL 5.05. I recall that IMAIL versions prior to 7 could not use SMTP AUTH on IP-less virtual domains when using an external database. So I guess it is time to ask which database you are using. I think the symptoms were very similar to what you report. Actually I don't remember 5.05 so perhaps at that version smtp-auth was limited to only ip-full domains. Someone will remember I'm sure.
So I suggest that Roger up at least to 5.09, and be sure that all of 5.09 pieces really get installed.
But I can't remember when stop/start SMTP svc didn't work for the case where Imail never returned from the AUTH CRAM-MD 5command.
