The mailbox was 50MB. After we finished recreating the mailbox, we deleted the new index and then opened it. IMail recreated the index in a second or so. I've also seen Imail index a dozen or so mailboxes within a couple of seconds (on the old, slow machine.) We are sometimes able to fix speed issues by deleting all the indexes for a user and letting IMail recreate them.
There's something definitely wrong with that mailbox. Recreating the index doesn't solve the speed problems, going to each page of messages causes another 5 minute wait.
As long as I've been (mostly) lurking on this list, I've never seen anyone mention a utility to fix or recreate a mailbox. Does one exist?

Actually, it may be that nothing is wrong.
You took a mailbox with 200 messages (1MB? 20MB?), and IMail needed to index it, since you didn't copy the index file over. 5 minutes does seem excessive, though.
I then created a new mailbox, copied the messages over (with Web Messaging), deleted the old file, and renamed the new file back to main.mbx. This time, the message display was instantaneous.
That's because copying over the new files, IMail automatically updated the index.
Does anyone know what's happening? Is there a utility available to fix problem mailboxes? We've occasionally had weird problems with mailboxes in the past, but nothing like this.
Most likely, the problem is simply the index creation (which may take longer when dealing with a .mbx file with no index, since IMail has to assume something is wrong if the index file isn't there).
