I am still trying to understand what is happening to my bounced emails:
If the server log says:
03:14 08:07 SMTP-(00000484) 250 OK
03:14 08:07 SMTP-(00000484) rdeliver aol.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] (1) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 6672
03:14 08:07 SMTP-(00000484) >QUIT
03:14 08:07 SMTP-(00000484) 221 SERVICE CLOSING CHANNEL
03:14 08:07 SMTP-(00000484) finished D:\IMail\spool\Qe23407a.SMD status=1
What this means (specifically, the "250 OK" line followed by the "rdeliver" line) is that AOL accepted the E-mail, and accepted responsibility for delivering (or possibly bouncing) it.
Then wasn't the email delivered?
You have to ask AOL. Most likely, the "secret" version of their spam control (as opposed to the publicly disclosed version) deleted the E-mail. The first thing to check is your reverse DNS entry, as AOL dislikes mailservers that are missing a reverse DNS entry (you can check at http://www.DNSstuff.com ).
If so, why do I get an email reply that says:
... while talking to air-xa03.mail.aol.com.: >>> RCPT To:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <<< 550 MAILBOX NOT FOUND 550 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... User unknown
That doesn't come from IMail. So either IMail didn't talk to AOL's mailserver (you are using a gateway, for example), or AOL's mailserver bounced the E-mail.
However, this tells you why the E-mail wasn't delivered. :)
I just thought that if the user was unknown, then I should have the '550' error in my logs with the message not being delivered at all.
That's up to the remote mailserver to handle. If you are dealing with the destination mailserver, you'll typically get a 550 response if the user doesn't exist (although 'nobody' aliases are more common now, so you may never know the address was wrong). However, if they are running a gateway, they will usually accept all E-mail, and then bounce the ones that are to users that do not exist.
