In your tests, make sure you restart all services to see the actual
effects. This is the way things work in 8.0, AFAIK:

8.0's SMTP32, though still a real file on-disk, is now only a
placeholder that may be used by custom SendNames to "shuttle" e-mails
to QM for real local or remote delivery. However, if the SendName is
set to SMTP32.EXE--even if SMTP32.EXE is technically a different disk
file from the one shipped with IMail--or if the SendName cannot be
found, direct communication with QM is used instead (saving the
process start overhead, etc.).

As long as you use a separate name for your EXE and "daisy-chain" to
SMTP32.EXE on exit, and start and stop all services after making your
changes on the Advanced tab, you should not have any issues. Declude's
products operate precisely in the fashion you describe and are not
broken by 8.0.
