We are running imail 7.07 sp3 on dell, Win 2000 sp3, full hf done, dual P3 1.26 with scsi disks. (system and imail separate). Smtp Auth on (no mail relay). Not using declude.
On box there are 2000 virtual domains and more then 10.000 pop3 mail boxes. Internet traffic is more then 1 mbit, and imail dir usage is near 10gb (without spool).
you mean the total mailbox storage is 10 GB? and you keep it well defragged?
what's your max .mbx limit?
Till friday, everything goes fine. On friday starting with working hours(9 am) smtpd stop responding.
Actually, it runs for 1 or 2 min and then stop responding for another 3 or 4 min. And goes like this till end of working hour (19 pm).
the Usual Supsects for sudden instability:
1. badly fragmented spool/, and/or badly fragmented mailbox tree, finally becoming so bad the NTFS screws up, apps timeout waiting for the disk.
2. newly HUGE .mbx files, like 100+ MBytes. SMTPD writes to them, and POP/webmail reads from them.
I see that, In the spool dir there are lots of (in 1-2 hour more then 2000) smd files and growing. When I try to delete, some of them (100) are in use (mostly locked i guess)
Also, in netstat I see more than 100 tcp establish connections to smtp port.
"to" meaning SMTPD receiving??
The SMTPD/SMTP sessions are probably being forced to live too long because, problems with the filesystem. An average session, in or out, should last under 10 seconds, sometimes less the 5 seconds.
On saturday and sunday we don't have the problem again.
But on monday it start again on 9 am. I have tried several things and then I change the relay options to relay for anyone and problem solved.
If you are being dictionary-attacked, and the attack is consuming all your SMTPD resources, the I don't see how relay for anyone would help.
If you are being relay-hijacked, then running an open relay will surely fill your disk very quickly. I suggest you go back to SMTP AUTH and look for the real reason.
Your IMail log file will is the first place to see what Imail is doing.
TaskManager for CPU usuage, and disk i/o.
