Due to the high volumes of cable/DSL subscriber abuse, the policy is: "you cable/DSL senders are guilty until proven innocent".
It is extremely fast and easy to prove yourself innocent, just complain about being blocked, and your IP is whitelisted.
What's the point of having your own mailserver if you are just going to relay through your provider?
All the advantages when you can admin your own mail server.
What's so great about having your mailserver deliver mail to MXs directly? esp if you are on DSL/cable and therefore look like a spammer?
For example, by using your provider's mailserver, you have no way to prove an E-mail was delivered to its intended destination.
You can only show the TCP connection to another IP. You can't prove anything about SMTP delivery.
You would have to coordinate with the ISP any time outgoing E-mail doesn't work properly.
In the case of most SMEs who run mailservers on DSL/cable, they don't have the expertise in the first place to run a mail server, let alone track down routing, SMTP, DNS problems.
And doing that is probably going to be nearly impossible with an ISP that won't allow vanity reverse DNS entries.
If a DSL/cable mailserver relays its outbound through the provider SMTP gateway, the PTR for legit dsl/cable mailserver is removed from the picture.
"vanity" is pejorative. There's nothing vain about setting up mailserver PTR hostnames according to best practice. and if you can't you relay through a server that can.
And, of course, AOL has so many other options that are not so draconian.
While everybody would like 100% precision, if you have a horrendous, expensive, unending, worsening problem that was costing you and your clients dearly, impacting your bottom line daily, and there is a 98% or 99%-accurate automatic solution, what would you do?
Len, this isn't a 98% or 99% solution.
For the volume of SPAM that comes from "subscriber PTR hostnames", it is.
It's about a 20% solution
Imail doesn't resolve and log connecting IPs as PTR hostnames. postfix does, so we can see what the PTR picture is very clearly.

If that 20% solution then blocks 2.5% of E-mail, that's blocking 1 E-mail for every 8 spams that are blocked (isn't that a 12.5% false positive ratio by your method? <G>).
those are your numbers, not mine.
And, if everybody starts doing this, the dumb spammers sending from their own computers will just start using the open relays and open proxies
but we have tons of those, even most, of those IPs in RBLs.
The idea is to restrict the sources of email to trackable IPs.
