Can you please name some of these "big network operators and ISPs"? I've been following this for years, and am only aware of AOL starting to do this yesterday.
From today's postfix maillog, taken from the "connect from" lines,
<sigh> I'm talking about companies *blocking* E-mail. Not what you block.
It is extremely fast and easy to prove yourself innocent, just complain about being blocked, and your IP is whitelisted.
Len, you're acting like a spammer! That's exactly what spammers say: "If you don't like it, unsubscribe."
If everybody were to think that way, then non-vanity's would have to send dozens, hundreds, possibly thousands of whitelist requests, at a *huge* cost.
What's the point of having your own mailserver if you are just going to relay through your provider?
All the advantages when you can admin your own mail server.
What's so great about having your mailserver deliver mail to MXs directly? esp if you are on DSL/cable and therefore look like a spammer?
If your set up a rule that says "Delete all E-mail that contains the word 'order' in it" (lots of people do!), I can tell you "Fix it!". If you force me to relay through our Internet provider, I have to ask them "Um, is something wrong on our end, your end, or their end?" If they can't change a reverse DNS entry, they aren't going to deal with that BS.
A good mailserver admin needs to know which side a problem is on. You can't do that by relaying your mail through someone else.
Len, if you want to push blocking of non-vanity reverse DNS, that's fine -- but if you refuse to let people know that 2.5% of their legitimate E-mail is caught, you're doing them a dis-service. If you want to push it, and let people know the drawbacks, that's fine.
