The DNS servers are configured statically, but they are a property of the
connection.  I don't have a LAN, so once I'm disconnected, there are no
DNS settings.

I guess that IMail will work over dial-up from a server on a LAN but won't
work over dial-up from a standalone server (because in the absence of any
network connection, there are no DNS settings.)

Unless it's possible to configure DNS servers as a system-wide rather than
connection-specific property?
