Hmm. Could this "very tiny amount of custom code" that you mentioned be a wrapper incorporating Ipswitch's SMPTD? I was, perhaps erroneously, suspecting that manipulating VRFY and RCPT TO: responses would, as Len stated, require a substitute for SMTPD. Any information -- and I am not expecting actual code -- would be welcome if sent to me off list. I agree that it may not be wise to pursue this avenue as a counter-atttack against address harvesters. And, yes, your response unbursted my [very probably ill-conceived] bubble :) As I've mentioned, this is a theoretical question and purely a matter of obtaining knowledgeable information from this excellent discussion list, not to be construed as a best-practice approach.
