Here is what also happened, the mail server was asking for a DNS lock- up for 127.0.0.1
( hmm, is the a new RFC for DNS "lockups" ? :)) )
The query was to the DNS @127.0.0.1 and/or for the PTR of 127.0.0.1 ?
it did this thousand of times and caused our upstream provider Sprint to lock us out of their DNS server, and then the whole thing stopped delivering mail, because I had the Sprint DNS server address in the SMTP service DNS box.
localhost A record and 127.0.0.1 PTR record are defined/resolved in the Windows hosts file (no DNS lookup required).
So here is my question,
Can I put more than one DNS server in the DNS box on the SMTP service?
Wrong question. The primary DNS for a mail server should be sufficient. If you can't get that working right, putting in another one that probably won't work right either isn't the solution.
It seems that the SMTP service only uses this DNS to send mail
at least, to find the MX and A records for @recipient.domain
And is this correct that a DNS lock-up needs to be done on local mail?
local recipient delivery does not require DNS lookups
