That's because the flaw is in Outlook, and not Imail. Imail supports POP3.
POP3 supports telling you the message size. Outlook aparently does not
support using this information. Clients like The Bat! aparently do use this
information. Outlook is flawed in this case rather than Imail.

Yes get a client that properly uses the information that POP3 can provide.
The protocol supports telling you the size of the message prior to fetching
the message.
