This may sound a bit obvious but can you just pull out the 3 pin connector pins and put them into the broken 4 pin connector? It should be easy enough to work out which pin is which as the cables will be colour coded. As I don't know the machine it may not be feasible if the connectors are too different.
Right, I would've done that, except I only have 1 fan (the original cpu) and am getting 2 new cpus, so I'm still short 1 even if I went that route. =) darn Gateway....
