I learned the IMail maintenance routine on ann 8.9GB mailbox. I wouldn't use it for day to day work. It's more of a capture mailbox. It is currently 3.6GB and takes about an hour to open using the IMail client on the server. Ideally it would be popped every few days. But 37,000 messages over the weekend may require another strategy. ;o)
