We've been running Win2k mirroring for darn near three years and never had that problem. We've had masters die and slaves die, and other than the pain of swapping cables when it is the primary drive that croaks, we've never had the problem you describe. What you likely suffered was damage to the boot sector, which I have had. I have an emergency boot disk (very simple to build) which kept the server going until I could fix the problem.
