We've decided to host a DNS server in the same mail box as IMail (7.15 on
Win2k). These are the only two non-OS specific services running on the box.
Our reasoning is to reduce the time taken for DNS lookups and hopefully
eliminate DNS timeouts that may occur. The DNS server (SimpleDNS Plus v3.5)
is tied to the loop back address 127.0.0.1 and IMail has been configured to
work with this IP as it's DNS server. The server isn't heavily loaded
processing some 10k emails per day with twin Xeon processors and 1GB RAM -
on overkill by any definition but gives us plenty of room for expansion. So
far we've not run into any problems and the system appears to be running
very smoothly. I just wanted to know if those of you with a really deep
technical knowledge had any problems with this type of set up or if there
are pitfalls to such an arrangement.
