OK. so it's not a DNS problem. Then what the heck would cause this error?

Whatever the remote mailserver's admin wants it to. The 550 error means "We won't accept your mail -- here's why". Followed by "Invalid domain [domain]", it doesn't provide a "why". My guess is that their DNS server is broken. Only they can say for sure what the problem is.
