No problem been there done that.. sometimes still do that.
BTW: The other posts on POP3 interruption are also quite on track as are large (many hundred messages) main.mbx files.

Thanks for your quick reply. Appreciate it. I'll experiment with deleting the index files on the server and clients, though if that's the source of the trouble, I'd expect the trouble to be constant, not sporadic like we're seeing. These users aren't accessing they'll accounts in other POP3 ways mentioned below.
Thanks also for reminding me to do my own research instead of asking questions first. I got lazy there. ;o)

I believe the problem is covered in the KB of both Eudora and Ipswitch.
See: http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19990108-JK01.htm
and http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1424hq.html
Essentially the Eudora LMOS.dat file may be corrupt or the problem is caused by POP3 or other simultaneous client access to the mailbox-- ie using web messaging and also checking mail via Eudora or having multiple web messaging clients check the same Imail account. Users can use both without problems, they just shouldn't do this at the same time.

Some of my users are complaining that they sometimes get duplicate downloads of their messages. It's as though IMail forgets when the last time the user downloaded and gives them everything in the main.mbx. Sometimes this will happen several times in a week or two.
This is a corporate mail server. All employees use Eudora, so I cannot tell if the problem would affect any other mail client.
The Eudora community is pointing their fingers at IMail.
Any suggestions? IMail 604 on WinNT4SP6.
