Too many people already using "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" to turn it off or change the delimiter. The "problem child" has an email username of "alan" and won't give it up. Getting hit by dictionary spammers. "alan-1", "alan-smith", "alan-a", "alan-b", etc.
I set a rule that says if HEADER does not contain [EMAIL PROTECTED] then delete the message. Even BCC: messages have a RCPT-TO: header with the user address.
