Agreed, I wouldn't my OS utilities silently violating filesystem rules.


Likewise, for trying to read files already open in non-readable mode.

Why would you expect or ever want an banal OS utility to override a file lock? It's not only a "gentelman's agreement" not to do so, but also a "police action" by the OS to enforce it (whether we are gentleman or not).
