I am no expert on this, but I believe your problem is trying to use
iMail as your gateway server. You probably should look at using
something along the lines of IMGate - http://imgate.meiway.com/

It'd also probably do some good if you did some checks to those top IPs
connecting to your server against a RBL database. It looks like they
are spewing a bunch of SPAM your way.

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ip4r.ch?ip=216.74.144.15
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ip4r.ch?ip=216.74.144.14
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ip4r.ch?ip=216.74.144.13
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ip4r.ch?ip=209.133.28.63

By blocking *4* IPs, you could cut down on 2.3% of your incoming email.
Those IPs are failing several RBL tests, so you must have absolutely no
spam filtering in place. Consulting the archives would also be
beneficial. I'd suggest that you spend a few hours reading because
you'd probably find the archives a good resource. You will run into a
lot of rhetoric and philosophical differences on how best to deal with
SPAM, but also quite a bit of information that applies directly to the
issue at hand.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Imail Gateway Woes, Suggestions Needed

I have two Imail Gateway's both running Imail 7.15, Declude Virus and
Junkmail, they only relay incoming mail to my POP/SMTP/Web Imail Server.
One server is a Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz, 1GB Ram, 36GB 15K SCSI. Second is a
Dual
PIII 966Mhz, 1GB Ram, 40GB IDE. I have about 100 Domains that are any
where
from slow to moderately busy. I have the MX Records pointed so that it
is
about an equal amount of traffic to each machine. The PIII is starting
to
become "overworked" so it will start spooling up mail around 13,000
Messages
in the spool waiting to be delivered. So I pointed one of the domains
that
is fairly high traffic to my Xeon server. Well about a day later the
xeon
started spooling up mail around 8,000 Messages in the spool waiting to
be
delivered. I increased the Maximum SMTP Processes on the Dual Xeon to
150, to get the mail delivered. I ran the Imail Log Analyzer and came
up
with the following:

SMTPD Connections

Total - 379,093
Occurrences Description

2,724 216.74.144.15
2,695 216.74.144.14
2,622 216.74.144.13
953 209.133.28.63

VERSUS

SMTP Remote Host Deliveries Total - 23,770

I know that this indicates a serious problem. I can't afford for my
mail to
be delayed anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours, this isn't good business, so
I
am up for suggestions. I know that there are people on this list that
Run
Imail Gateways/Servers that see way more volume than I do.

So what should I expect to see from the above mentioned Xeon server Load
wise?

What do most of you have your Maximum SMTP Processes set to?

Should I replace the PIII with another Dual Xeon and Run ROUND Robin DNS
for
load balancing?

Thanks,

Kris McElroy
