No, Len. Anti-spam software is designed to block spam. Anti-virus software is designed to block viruses. Blocking file extensions does not help improve anti-spam detection.
Anti-spam softwware can and does implement attachment policies effectively at the MX.
That is not anti-spam software; that is "content management", "policy management" or whatever the current buzzword for it is.

Yes, that is one of the things that mailserver AV software is expected to handle.
You *can* write your own anti-spam filter to attempt to block file extensions (see the archives for lots of different attempts). But just be aware that most of them either block a lot of legitimate E-mail
nope, "my server, my policies". If my policy is "no dangerous attachments or other executable content in email", then any email that has attachments or executable content is illegitimate. My MX decides what is legitimate, not the sender.
Len, you are mis-reading this.
I am saying "If you write a filter to block .exe files, some .exe files will be able to get through, and some non-.exe files will get caught", not "Blocking .exe's is bad".
People have been trying for years to write a filter in IMail that effectively blocks extensions. It has not happened yet.
