Occasionally my server starts sending back '550 unknown user' when the users exist. I believe that it returns this for all users on the system.
What version of IMail are you running? This is clearly a serious problem, although I don't believe I have heard of it occurring before.
Are you using the IMail database (registry), NT database, or ODBC? If it is one of the latter, it could be that the connection to the database isn't working.
